sometimes you just want to crank warren zevon and get the world right, and when i wrote 'how to lose,' i was going through one of those nights. it's a simple song--all my songs are simple songs--but my goal was to turn my usual sad bastard outlook into one that was more hopeful and honest. maybe just honest, i'm not gonna push for hopeful. but anyway, this song is a rocker and just wants to be turned up loud, like a zevon song.

we cut a 'live' version of 'hills' the same day, and it turns a downtempo folk song into a veritable rocker. since we cut this as a three-piece, i kept my half-hardcore half-dave-rawlings guitar solo. pretty proud of it! kimbo and garrett overdubbed their vocals because she wasn't there in the room, but the rest is raw and live. i played a semi-hollow telecaster through a keeley mod blues driver into a fender concert using the volume knob on the guitar for more gain. and this has been inside baseball.

i've been teasing the next album, 'wild azaleas and other tall tales', for a while now, and it's almost finished. expect to see a single or two in april or may.
